Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth has claimed Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong wants a Manchester United transfer despite not admitting it publicly.
According to Sheth, De Jong is claiming to be happy at Barcelona in public so he doesn’t put himself in an awkward position should the move to Manchester United fail to materialize.
Manchester United and Barcelona are far apart in their valuation of De Jong. The Red Devils have offered €70million for the midfielder but Barcelona is demanding €100million.
De Jong is reportedly keen on reuniting with Erik ten Hag at Manchester United as he believes the Manchester United boss knows how best to utilize his talents
De Jong worked under Ten Hag at Ajax before his £75million transfer to Barcelona in the summer of 2019.
Talking to GIVEMESPORT about de Jong’s situation, Sheth said:
“As far as de Jong is concerned, publicly, I’m sure the noises will be that he’s happy at Barcelona.
“There’s no reason not to say that because if the move doesn’t work out,
“and he said he wanted to leave, it doesn’t leave him in a very good position.
“But, I think, the noises we’re hearing is that there’s a willingness from all parties to do a deal.
“The fact that Erik ten Hag is at Manchester United, he’s their new manager
“They’ve worked very closely together, and arguably he’s had the best form of his career under that manager.
“I think there is maybe a leaning towards ‘yes’ – he would be open to making that move to Old Trafford.”
What has De Jong said publicly about Manchester United’s interest in signing him from Barcelona this summer?
Asked about United’s pursuit of him, Frenkie de Jong said:
“You’re always flattered when teams show interest in you as a player.
“But I am at the biggest club in the world at the moment and I feel fine there, so no news.”
De Jong still has four years left on his Barcelona contract after signing a contract extension in 2020.
