Manchester United make contact with striker after receiving greenlight from Erik ten Hag

Manchester United has ‘initiated contact’ with Benfica over star striker Darwin Nunez, according to Givemesport.

The 22-year-old striker is attracting interest from top teams across Europe after enjoying an outstanding season with the Portuguese giants in which he scored 32 goals in 39 appearances for Benfica

Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor told Givemesport that Nunez is a player that Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag likes

However, the club’s hierarchy has already made efforts to discover how much he would cost.

He told Givemesport: “I do sort of question where United’s priorities lie; it’s probably a striker to help Ronaldo

“So, Darwin Nunez, I know he’s a player definitely that United like, and they’ve initiated contact with Benfica

“And his agent to sort of gauge what kind of price tag would be enough to get him.”

David Ornstein of The Athletic revealed last month that Manchester United, Chelsea,

Paris Saint-Germain is leading the race to sign Nunez this summer

Ornstein originally reported that Nunez would cost any potential suitor in the region of €70 million (£58.2m), but that figure has now dropped to €60m (£50.6m).

Tempting Nunez to join Manchester United might be difficult for the Red Devils after TalkSPORT reporter Alex Crook revealed Nunez wants to move to a club in the Champions League next term.

Manchester United will play Europa League football next season after finishing 6th in the Premier League.
